ATM (Azienda Trasporti Milanesi - Milanese Transportation Company) is the municipal public transport company of Milan and 46 surrounding municipalities. It operates 4 metro lines (soon to be 5), 18 tram lines, 131 bus lines and 4 trolleybus lines, carrying almost a billion passengers every year.

Requesting Your Card
If you wish to purchase a Tessera ATM, you will need to go to an ATM Point, bring a passport photograph, a valid ID and your Codice Fiscale. If you are a student, bring a student certificate in order to obtain the student pricing. At the entrance, collect a "Request Form" and fill it while you are waiting for your turn. Collecting Your Card
You will collect your electronic card immediately.
Validity and Cost
The electronic card is valid for 4 years and costs €10. Membership costs may vary depending on the Card type & membership duration. For instance, Student Card costs €22 per month for 12 months, or €200 if you make an annual payment.
Recommendations and Regulations for Use
The electronic card resembles a credit card in appearance and properties. As such it should be handled and stored with care and should not be placed near sources of electromagnetic radiation.
Charging Your Card
When issued, the ATM card is “empty” and should be charged. You can charge your card at the ticket machines found in all underground stations, at authorized outlets overground and at ATM Points.
Validating Your Card When Travelling
At the start of your journey and every time you change vehicle, you should swipe your card on the electronic card reader on board overground vehicles and at the ticket barriers in the underground. On vehicles which do not have an electronic card reader you do not need to validate your card: in the event of a ticket inspection you will only need to present your card.
Renewing Expired Cards
When the 4 year validity period of your electronic card has lapsed, you will need to renew it at an ATM Point by displaying a valid ID. Renewing electronic cards costs €10.
